EPA Method 5F - Particulate Emissions
Method Overview
- Isokinetic.
- Heated out of stack filter at 320oF + 25oF
- "Condensible" particulates pass through the filter and condense in impingers. Can readily be combined with a CPM Method.
- Tester may adjust out-of-stack filter temperature to suit source specific conditions.
- Stainless steel nozzles should be used with great care, port scrapings can bias results high.
Target Compounds
- non-Sulfate Particulate Matter (nSPM) -- those substances retained in the sampling nozzle/probe and on a heated filter.
Performance Tips
- During sampling a filter is maintained at a specified temperature (320oF + 25oF)
- DI/UF water should be used for the probe/nozzle rinses
- Run the train isokinetically.
- The collected filter sample is digested with DI/UF water and mixed with the probe rinse.
- A portion of the mixed extract is analyzed for sulfate content using ion chromatography.
- The remainder is neutralized with ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH), dried and weighed.
- The amount of sulfate in the sample is stoichiometrically determined as ammonium sulfate [(NH4)2SO4] and is subtracted from the total particulate weight.
- The result is reported as nonsulfate particulate matter.
Shipping
- Samples may be shipped at ambient temperatures.
- Be sure to include a chain of custody for each shipping container.
Applications
- This method is generally meant for emissions from Catalytic Cracking Units at Petroleum Refineries.
